Prof. Hossain spoke at the science session of the Arcsus-SDG workshop in Reykjavik!
The Nordic
Council of Ministers’ funded project entitled “Arctic Urban Sustainability and
the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the Lens of Arctic Mayor Forum”, organized
its first gathering as a Pre-event in connection to the Arctic Circle Assembly
2023, held from October 19-22, 2023. The workshop was a pre-event organized on
October 18 at the University of Iceland’s Veröld-House of Vigdís. The event was
divided into two sessions – the first session contained academic presentations
from scholars from the participating universities in the project. The
participating universities are the Luleå University of Technology, UiT Arctic
University of Norway, University of Iceland, University of Lapland and Hokkaido
University. The second part of the program included round-table discussions
where representatives from Arctic cities as delegates from the Arctic Mayor Forum
engaged in dialogue amongst themselves and with scholars. The round-table
discussions brought pictures of the challenges facing the Arctic cities and how
such challenges are addressed with clear action plans to meet the UN
Sustainable Development Goals. In his academic presentation, Prof. Hossain highlighted the need for a bottom-up approach to governance to meaningfully
address local challenges through the engagement of local and regional
institutions to which the Arctic Mayor Forum can play an effective and influential
role.
